Unlimited Potential

Today is the last day of the month, 2 days ago was spent with family celebrating Thanksgiving. Last night we went into our neighboring town to see the Christmas Electric boat parade…we met our friends there, then came back to the house for pizza and to hang out. 29 days ago, I committed to write 30 posts for NaBloPoMo, I set out to write these 30 posts for both of my blogs SquaareKat and Mangia, Mangia…No Talk! (My food blog)

Technically I could say that I accomplished what I set out to do I posted  37 posts collectively  for each of my blogs, but that wasn't the rules nor was it my goal… my goal was actually  to write 30 posts for both blogs, and although that wasn't the rule either …I wanted to do it, regardless.

What I realized is that daily writing is not easy…yet for the past 30 days I learned many things, some about the world of blogging, and a few things about me and my own capabilities.

I have shared many recipes and family stories on Mangia, Mangia…No Talk throughout the year so I thought I was ready to take on the task to write a post for both blogs for 30 days!

So here I am on the 30th day and basically I am feeling really good and dare I say proud of what I accomplished…so I didn't write 60 posts, I’ll tell you what I did do.

I made time to write what I wanted and what I could.

I received a great compliment regarding my food blog, Mangia… Mangia…No Talk!!! I received the note via Facebook while I was at work, complimenting my writing voice and recipes. She then asked if I could include a print friendly recipe card.  So at lunch I researched the internet on a how to add a print friendly recipe card, that evening when I was home I researched some more; you see I did not want to add a print button but I did want to add an option to  print the recipe itself and not the entire post with pictures. I successfully figured out how to insert a print-friendly option.

Additionally, I also figured how to add a post on Blogher and learned about links, and that my pictures have URL addresses which is needed to add into the post. I might be called a novice Blogger, I don’t have many posts behind me yet. Nevertheless, I was able to figure out some of the nuts and bolts of blogging. There is so much more that I need learn but this scrappy blogger is up to the challenge.

Because of sheer necessity, I cleaned out a space for me to write…just what I needed to do.

Lastly , I want to say that as far as I know Mangia, Mangia…No Talk  is what it is, my food blog, my words to nurture and feed my family and friends with all my love that I serve at the table. As for SquaareKat, I am not sure what direction it will go, because throughout this past month I found many wonderful blogs, all have a story, all write what they know, they are truthful and quite open to share what is on their mind… I am not sure how much I want to share; how open I want to be about me, and what voice I want to use….so for now I will be a scrappy whispering blogger because my potential is unlimited.

Space….clean-up!

I took a vacation day last Friday because I needed to get a huge chore done.  This chore was one of those things that kept nagging at me.  The upstairs bedroom became a sore area when almost everything that was brought into the house was dumped into the room …. books, schoolwork, mail, junk mail, bills, fliers…just to name a few.  I hated this area, it made my blood boil thinking about it, but the room wasn't avoidable, it is not a room I could shut the door and pretend it doesn't exist.

First, it doesn't have a door, second, the room  is adjacent to my son’s bedroom, but technically, it can be considered the same room; it’s just that we have it separated by the staircase… and finally another reason I couldn't ignore the area, it’s the same place where I blog and do all my computer things.

Talk about a heavy load and my will to ignore the mess while I made my way to the computer.Yet there was no getting around this I was miserable and cranky because of this area in my home, but I was patient and kept on the blinders since the end of the school year and through-out the summer… I had no other choice we were both working many hours outside the home and the times that we were home other chores trumped cleaning this bedroom. So a couple of weeks ago I realized that Nick would be off last weekend and on Friday as well, and I could ask for a vacation day… I pumped everyone up, and then explained if something lands in your hand at that time, at that exact moment the following actions need to take place:
  1.  File it in its respective place.
  2.  Put it away, where it belongs
  3.  If none of the above, throw it out….

Here is what happened for two days:

Nick sorting through it all …can you see the messy trail?  I would not dare take any more pictures it is embarrassing.

I went through all the kid’s school stuff … I now have two boxes of usable notebooks. Then I organized all my journals, separated the ones I used from the ones that are still new. I also put together my very own writing space…it is exactly what I need.

View from the top of the steps.  Sofa bed to the right, desk to the left is where we keep all our important paperwork; i.e. bills, and school paperwork.  The desk with the computer is just that, our desk with the computer. Draping the chair is a shawl I made and wear on chilly nights, when I am writing, stalking Pinterest, or reading blogs.  At the very end by the window is the writing space that I put together, please excuse the window, while cleaning I put the valance and a tablecloth in the wash.

A reminder ….by the way I love dragonflies….

I have had these jars for many years, finally I found a place where they are used or displayed.
I found these in a knick-knack store in the next town where I live …and it makes me laugh because there was one in the store that said “ashes of ex-lovers” I thought that was funny, it reminded me of someone I know.

Believe me this space might still look cluttered, but it is 100% better than it was. I threw away a lot of the crap that had accumulated, and the rest was put in its place and organized… It is still a work in progress. Next job the basement!

Showing up!

http://eyeonlifemag.com

"Don't be afraid. Don't be daunted. Just do your job. Continue to show up for your piece of it, whatever that might be. If your job is to dance, do your dance. If the divine, cockeyed genius assigned to your case decides to let some sort of wonderment be glimpsed, for just one moment through your efforts, then " Olé!" And if not, do your dance anyhow. And “Olé!" to you, nonetheless […] just for having the sheer human love and stubbornness to keep showing up." Elizabeth Gilbert

This is Elizabeth Gilbert; author, I admire her. She wrote one of my favorite books called Eat,Pray, and Love a fascinating journey.  The words above are from a Ted Talk speech from 2009….anyone who needs to be inspired should watch the video:

Passionately Curious

If I had to pick a saying that might describe me, it would have to be this one:

"I have no special talents, I am only Passionately Curious!"
Albert Einstein

Yes, I can say that I am passionately curious; I have always had a need to know more and a want to do good for everyone-and myself. Yet the truth is I know that I am missing a couple of traits that is needed to be passionately curious, successfully.

These additional qualities are carefree and fearless.

Despite the fact, I often do things that fit Mr. Einstein’s quote. I usually am fearful and always wonder; am I doing the right thing, and will it or will I be accepted? (Who cares; apparently, I do) I often think that my actions and I will not be accepted.

What follows is that my serious somber mind takes over and what the heart wants to express and reveal is silenced with fear.

Perhaps that is the answer to being passionately curious, carefree and fearless. Passion and curiosity actually come from the heart, it belongs there, without fear or regrets, because that is where it will thrive.

Moreover, who knows by following this one simple rule I can actually follow my dream!

James

James

See that little boy …well he is my son.  This picture was the first time I saw him.  This was one of many pictures from the adoption agency.
What followed afterwards was a 3 week visit with us … he was a couple of years older when we first met him and his sister, but he was a charmer, and great kid.
Three and half years ago it was official, the adoption went through, he became our son, and his sister became our daughter….
We arrived home as a family in the spring and I became a mom to a boy and girl that did not speak a word of English …how we communicated, I have no idea; it’s a blur.  Yet somehow, all our points, concerns, and feelings were understood.

He is now in the middle school…and is a fine little man.  We thought he was going to struggle in the 6th grade.  He took on so many responsibility, joined the boy scouts, and lighting crew for the school play.

Dad giving him tissues as a gift for his birthday!

Oh yeah, he got what he wanted!

With me (so proud of him)

Moving up day,  (graduation day)

Skipping stones

A  day at the beach!

James and dad!

I am mentioning all of this, because what this boy has done in 3 ½ years, I am not sure if my husband or I could have done.
He learned a new language
Made friends
Learned how to socialize
Learned how to study
He is our son and we are so proud of all his accomplishments, we know this is all so new to him having parents and guiding him to do well.

A couple of weeks ago I decided that the electronic games were not allowed during school nights.   As I said he took on a lot, lighting crew, boy scouts, and all his homework and studying he had to do.  He listened but at some point, he asked me to reconsider and said, I’m getting good grades and listening to you and dad.  Please let me play after dinner!
Both my husband and I agreed and said he can play for 1 hour every night.  But if we see that his schoolwork or  his grades start to slip we will stop it.

So 3 ½ years here with us and our son is on

The Honor Roll

Awesome job James!

You amaze us, we love you, and your family is so proud of you!

Day 15 … I’m at the halfway point!

Hooray!

YAY???
I am still here,
I am the engine that couldafter this post, there will be more
my promise to me…
This is a marathon…not a sprint, so I go at my own pace and hopefully and I mean this so much…hopefully I will hear the cheers, or the jeers!
Whichever is okay for now, because the silence is deafening!

My favorite time of day…

My favorite time of day is dusk. In the fall and the winter months, after daylight savings time occurred, dusk starts earlier and sadly, it is all happening while I’m at work.  Yet sometimes I  get a glimpse of dusk’s performance, its soft lighting in one area and the brightness in another area. I see shadows appearing in shapes of trees, and buildings.

Each night at dusk as the sun sets and tells us good night we are treated to a spectacular gift of a painted sky of purple, blue, red and gold…Thank you I whisper…it looks like you had a wonderful day today!

This picture was taken this summer at my favorite place; our town beach on the North Shore of Long Island.

Purple and blue on the horizon

At dusk step outside listen to bird's last song of the night…

I call it

“ The Children’s Hour”

On November 13 (The Odd Couple)

Narrator: On November 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence; that request came from his wife. Deep down, he knew she was right, but he also knew that someday he would return to her. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his friend, Oscar Madison. Several years earlier, Madison's wife had thrown HIM out, requesting that HE never return. Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

Who remembers this show….I remember this show being on in the afternoons  or before dinner….when I was a kid, after school television were soap operas,  Looney Tunes cartoons, and shows like:

I loved General Hospital back then and what followed was this:

Remember their themes

Monster Week (Nicks Favorite)

Do you remember these to?

I just asked my husband what he did when he got home from school without missing a beat said,
“I watched TV!” …. I did too, but first I had to do my homework.

I found this tale or fable; many years ago, had it scanned to myself.  I found it in my documents tonight, and like to share it with you. Hope you like it.

Hope all is quiet, and we are all contented…No matter what our pile of $#!+ is,  at this moment; let’s be thankful for the happy and unhappy.

Ssh, me being happy!
